Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR)
The bank's capital as a share of its risk-weighted assets. A higher ratio means a bigger cushion to absorb losses. NBE sets a regulatory minimum.
Non-Performing Loans (NPL) Ratio
The share of loans that borrowers have stopped repaying. Lower is healthier; a rising ratio signals credit stress.
Return on Equity (ROE)
Profit earned for every birr of shareholder equity. It shows how efficiently the bank turns owners' capital into profit.
Return on Assets (ROA)
Profit earned for every birr of total assets. It measures how efficiently the bank uses everything it controls to generate profit.
Capital adequacy
NBE minimum is 8%. At or above 15% is a strong cushion; below 8% breaches the regulatory floor.
Asset quality
An NPL ratio above 10% indicates elevated credit stress and moves the indicator to 'watch'.
Profitability trend
Year-on-year net profit growth below zero (a decline) weighs the indicator toward 'watch'.
