Gross Written Premium (GWP)
Total premium income from policies issued during the fiscal year, before reinsurance. The core volume measure for an insurer.
Claims Ratio
Claims paid as a share of premium earned. A persistently high ratio means most premium income goes back out as claims, squeezing underwriting profit.
Technical (Actuarial) Reserves
Money set aside to pay future claims, estimated actuarially. NBE mandates disclosure; adequacy of reserves is central to an insurer's solvency.
Net Profit Margin
The share of revenue that remains as profit after all expenses and claims. At or above 8% is treated as strong for Ethiopian insurers.
Underwriting discipline
A claims ratio persistently above 85% leaves little room for expenses and profit; the indicator moves to 'watch'.
Profitability
At or above 8% net margin is strong for the sector; any loss (margin below zero) moves the indicator to 'watch'.
Profitability trend
Year-on-year net profit growth below zero (a decline) weighs the indicator toward 'watch'.
